Be a Teacher

Wisdom Wednesday – Be a Teacher

Hello Everyone!

I took the entire month of April off  from blogging for education, mental health, and personal growth.  I have missed you all so much and hope you all are doing well!

I took some amazing classes last month in photography (check out some of my latest work here at Karrie’s Photography), art, business, health and well being and personal growth.  This is super exciting for me because now it means I have so much more to share with my students and all of you!

While I was doing all of this in depth learning, I was also teaching.  I have been loving my time with my photography students and have added business mentoring as well. Check out this new addition over at the SHOP.  I will be adding a Small Business Saturday blog to share some popular tips I’ve been using with my business clients.

At the very end of one of my classes I read the quote above.  I thought it was so inspiring because we are always learning but sometimes we don’t even realize it.  You do not need a fancy degree to learn, you can just go out into the world, visit a museum, travel to a new place, walk the park or beach, pick up a book, pick up a pen (or keyboard), and even teach it!  Just because we become a teacher of something does not mean we stop learning or have learned it all.  In contrast it means we are learning the subject we are teaching with even more depth and understanding.

So this is my hope for all of you.  No matter what age you are or what journey in life you are on, continue learning what you are curious about.

Then go out and teach it.

As always here is one more quote for you:

“A great teacher teaches so that their not needed anymore.”  Heidi Hope

I also spent time reading some amazing new books I can’t wait to share with you so catch me tomorrow for Thoughtful Thursday.

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

Wisdom Wednesday

Be Thoughtful

Wisdom Wednesday

Be Thoughtful

Thoughtful: Absorbed in or involving thought.

Of course being thoughtful also means showing consideration for the needs of other people.  But for today we are considering the first definition.

Be Thoughtful

Did you realize that you cannot do anything in life without thinking of it first?

You have to be mindful of your thoughts because your thoughts become your reality.  What you think about day in and day out is what you actually create in and around your life.

If you are thinking negative thoughts the world you have created for yourself will be negative. If you are thinking positive thoughts you are creating a positive world.  The Truth is that since we are made in God’s image we are all creators. Artists of our own lives.  Creators of our own world.  Who’s in your world?  What’s in your world?  How do you feel?  Where do you go? Where do you live? What do you believe?  We have all created each and every scenario we are involved in by our thoughts.

Below are a few more quotes from you by Wallace D. Wattles:

“There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the inter spaces of the universe.”

“A thought, in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.”

“Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.”

This week try to be mindful of your thoughts.  Try focusing on positive thoughts more often. Health, happiness, joy, peace, kindness, compassion, & love.  Be thoughtful, mindful, and present and see what you can create in your own life.

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

Be Yourself

Wisdom Wednesday

Be Yourself!

Yesterday I told you my story about deciding to shoot 75% with natural light and why.  It was one of the first steps I took towards being ME in my business.  I hope it encouraged you to see that you do not have to compete with anybody but yourself.  If you want to be better just be a better YOU.

Here’s another story for you.

I LOVE cookies and icecream.

I mean LOVE.  Don’t get me wrong I’m a total chemical free whole foods guru, so although they are organic gluten free cookies and natural icecream I still LOVE my cookies and icecream.  So naturally what do my boys love?  Cookies and icecream.  Since my youngest was a baby I have been a huge fan of  The Feingold Diet.  A chemical free way of living that believes children should not be deprived of all sugar because sugar is actually a natural product.

Well, A few years ago I had this brilliant plan to eliminate sugar from my house.  I thought my children and I ate way too much sugar and should go “OFF” sugar.  As always my kitchen was filled with fruits and vegetables and healthy snacks and scrumptious meals, just no cookies and icecream.  No sugar of anykind.  Yet every single one of my three boys came home and after scouring the kitchen, cupboards, pantry, and frig said:

“Mom there’s nothing to eat.”

“Mom why isn’t there anything to eat?”

“Mom, are you going to the store?  There’s no food in the house.”

Seriously!  Of course there was food in the house!  There was all kinds of food in the house. However, there were NO:

Cookies & Icecream

A common staple during every shopping trip I made and always in the house and listed under the Knowles Family Food Pyramid as a healthy food, are cookies and icecream.  I’m a baker at heart.  If I don’t buy cookies I bake them.  All three boys could bake a batch of cookies on their own by twelve years old.  A favorite family hobby is frequenting the local icecream shops and bakeries wherever we may be.  It’s a passion of ours.  For good or bad we love cookies and icecream.

When I decided to break from being ME, complete and utter chaos broke out.  It wasn’t me. It wasn’t them.  It wasn’t US.  We like cookies and icecream.  We are not going to die tomorrow by eating cookies and icecream.  We love fruits and vegetables but our thing is cookies and icecream.

That day has gone down in history as the day mom made us go sugar free for 24 hours. Actually it wasn’t even 24 hours because I went to the store the next day to fill up on cookies and icecream.  Even close family members that know us have laughed about it.

So what I am trying to say here is that if you are not YOU, the real YOU, Chaos is about to irrupt somewhere at some point and you will know it and feel that things are all WRONG!

So why chance it?  Read this quote above and try and truly understand that you really are the only YOU on the planet.  Nobody is like you and nobody ever will be like you.  Embrace You.  Love You.  Be You!

A few more quotes for you:

“Since you are like no other being ever created since the beginning of time, you are incomparable.” Brenda Ueland.

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.  And if you block it, it will never exist and will be lost.”  Martha Graham.

I hope this little story encourages you to look inside, see who you are, and…

Be Yourself.

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

Wisdom Wednesday

Wisdom Wednesday

Have you ever had a great idea or felt inspired to start something new but find yourself coming up with a bunch of reasons, or excuses, as to why you shouldn’t do it?

Your too young.  Your too old.  Your too inexperienced.  Your not educated.  You will be criticized.  You will fail.

Well many extremely successful artists and entrepreneurs will tell you otherwise.

Those little voices of self doubt in your head are really just our ego using our own fears against you.  Fear of what others will think.  Fear of failure.  Believe it or not even fear of success. So how do we overcome such fears?  With Love and Passion.  Two things we’ve already discussed.

Steven also says “The opposite of fear is love-love of the challenge, love of the work, the pure joyous passion to take a shot at our dream and see if we can pull it off.”

So how do we begin?

“Begin with the end in mind.”  Stephen R. Covey.  Stephen tells us to take a look at the big picture.  What is the end goal you want to achieve?  Start by writing it out.  Envision what you want others and yourself to get out of this endeavor.  Then BEGIN.  Start with small achievable tasks to start your journey.  When you start a real journey what do you do?  You plan out your trip.  You write down where you want to go.  You look at photos and do research.  You map out the places you will visit.  You buy tickets to the amusement park and reserve hotel rooms.  You pack a bag.  You fill your gas tank.  Then You BEGIN.  You get in the car and start driving.  Because you started with the end in mind you know where you are going and what you will do when you get there.  However, you are also enjoying the ride along the way.  Even if things do not go exactly according to plan it’s always fun to take a detour and discover something new right?

A few more insightful quotes for you:

“Stop waiting for permission to be as great as you already are.  No permission needed.”  Mari Forlio.

“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”  Walt Disney.  Have you seen the movie Walt Before Mickey?”  If your looking for some inspiration this is a great movie on Netflix.  It shows us how he started out broke and starving and homeless with little support.  Not that we enjoy another humans suffering but the moral of the story is that anybody can get started with nothing but their ideas and creative vision even YOU.

I hope this inspiration helps you get going and have the self-confidence to get started.

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!!

Be Creative

Wisdom Wednesday

Be Creative!

Creative:  Having or showing an ability to make new things or think of  new ideas.

Creativity:  Creativity is a phenomenon whereby something new and somehow valuable is formed.  The ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations.

Did you know we were all born to be creative and we actually are creative everyday?   There is this false perception that being creative means you have to be some kind of starving, temperamental artist.  The truth is that every day we wake up we are creating things.  We are creating our choice of wardrobe, maybe our children’s wardrobes, our hair, our meals, what our home looks like, what our job looks like, maybe what our desk at work or home is decorated with, what kind of car we drive, what kind of pets we have, what we buy at the store.  These are all things that we bring into creation every day without realizing it. Everything you do in a day is a reflection of the day you created.  So in a sense we are all artists already.

So how can you bring such creativity into a professional existence? Well you have to start with YOU.  What do you like?  What are your favorite colors?  What are your favorite foods? What are your favorite animals? What inspires you?

Did you notice how the definitions above focus on creating new things and ideas.  YOU. You are creating these new meaningful, valuable ideas.  So how would you do that? What are the most important tools you need to create a new idea?  1.  Your Brain.  2.  Your imagination.  Cameras, paint brushes, pencils, sewing machines, pens, keyboards… these things are not even listed under the definition.

Yesterday I talked about not going crazy over getting the latest greatest equipment when your starting out in your business.  Those material objects are not as important as what you are going to do with them. What you are going to create with them for your clients. Yes your clients are paying you for you not for your gadgets.  So any tools, equipment, and supplies that you purchase to use in your business make sure you are purchasing them to use as tools to enhance your own creativity.  Be Yourself.

Remember your creative self already exists.  Just give it some time, space, and attention to grow and incorporate the best YOU in your work that you can.

“Creativity is seeing something that doesn’t exist already.”  Michele Shea.

“Why should we all use our creative power?  Because there is nothing that makes people so generous, joyful, lively, bold, and compassionate, so indifferent to fighting and the accumulation of objects and money.”  Brenda Ueland.

Be Loving

Be Loving

Wisdom Wednesday:  Be Loving!

“You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.  This is the greatest and first commandment.  The second, like it, its this: You must love your neighbor as yourself.   On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets.”

Loving:  Feeling or showing love or great care.  Love:  An intense feeling of deep affection.

Isn’t this amazing that Jesus said the second commandment is to Love your neighbor as yourself?!  Love is not just an emotion we can show our family and friends.  We can and should express love to everyone we meet.

Yesterday we talked about using connections to create your art.  Well you can’t find a connection with your client if you don’t truly love them as your neighbor.  You need to feel affection for them: As a human being.  As a friend.  As a parent.

Your clients already love their children and their spouses and family members.  But as a photographer you could be a perfect stranger coming to photograph them.  How are you going to get them to naturally behave as they would if you weren’t around?  The only way is to treat them with genuine love and respect.  This cannot be forced.  You have to be the kind of person who really cares about people in general and show that to others.  Why are you there to begin with? You truly want to create priceless, timeless photographic art for them and their loved ones. In order to even want that for them you already have a love for them.  You just need to show it.  People can feel a fake.  Be real.  Be true.  Be honest.  Be LOVING.

When you feel this love for all of the people around you especially those in your every day world, family, friends, and clients alike, you will allow an opportunity for others to show love back to you and to each other.  Then, and only then, will  you capture Love in the form of art

“The force of love has no opposite.  There is no other power in life but love.  All the negative things you see in the world are always, always a lack of love.”  Rhonda Byrne, Author of The Secret & The Power

Wisdom Wednesday

Be Patient

Wisdom Wednesday:  Be Patient!

“I refuse to settle for something less than great.  And if it takes a lifetime, then that’s how long I’ll wait.”  Dolly Parton

Patient:  Able to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious.

Photography by Samuel Knowles

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we were never annoyed or anxious?  Isn’t this the ultimate goal in our daily lives to tolerate delays and problems.  I  mean they happen to us all lets face it. Even the Bible says “time and unexpected events overtake them all.” Ecclesiastes 9:11

However, if we were patient with these circumstances, and with others, and with ourselves, and with delays, problems, and unexpected events, wouldn’t things be so much easier?  I have learned from experience that when you live a patient life your anxiety dissolves itself.  What starts to happen is that you do not even notice these delays or problems anymore.  Actually that’s because they don’t happen anymore. They kind of go away because your not focusing such negative energy around such troublesome events in your life. Life is easier.  You are happier.  Sometimes we create the drama and urgent situations ourselves by being impatient, annoyed, and anxious.

This is true with your dreams and goals as well.  If your just starting a new business path or learning a new craft you have to be patient.  The truth is we never stop learning.  You can not know everything in the world.  Life is an ongoing process.  So you have to be patient and understand that in order to get where you want to be you have to work hard, persevere, be patient, wait and keep working and learning along the way.

Exercise:  Practice being patient in your daily life even with annoying, urgent situations and see if they start to disappear…

Just like nature is patient with this little daisy blooming, the cold white world disappears with the change of Seasons bringing a warm colorful Spring.

Here are a few more quotes for you.

“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.” Theodore Roosevelt.

“Anything worth doing is worth doing slowly.” Mae West.

Of course there’s the old standard

“Anything worth having is worth waiting for.” Unknown.
